It is one of Florence's most impressive landmarks and has been a symbol of the city's beauty for many hundreds of years: the Ponte Vecchio. Starting in the fall, extensive restoration work will be carried out on the building. Marchesi Antinori is supporting the project with one million euros.
Ponte Vecchio in Florence is no ordinary bridge, it is rather a reminiscence of the fascination of days long past, a place where time seems to stand still. Built in the first half of the 14th century, the building has survived turbulent times and has already undergone several minor renovations. Now, however, extensive maintenance work is being carried out for the first time, which is also intended to improve the aesthetics of the bridge.
The special thing about this project is the generous support from Marchesi Antinori to help the municipal administration cover the costs. In the spirit of Renaissance patronage, the winery is donating the impressive sum of one million euros.
"The history of our family has been closely linked to the city of Florence since the 13th century," explains Piero Antinori, Honorary President of Marchesi Antinori. "The city has given us so much over the years that we are now particularly pleased to be able to make our contribution to this special project. The 50th anniversary of our Tignanello is the perfect opportunity to support Florence in preserving this flagship."
Dario Nardella, the mayor of the town, is delighted with the generous donation: "I would like to thank the Antinori family from the bottom of my heart for this special gift. Thanks to this generous gesture, we are able to maintain the city's artistic and historical heritage".
The extensive restoration work was necessary to counteract the signs of wear and tear on the bridge. "The Ponte Vecchio has withstood floods, fires and the Great War and is still standing strong after many centuries. However, it is now time to carry out complex maintenance for the first time. In the end, we will have an even more beautiful bridge than we do now," says Mayor Nardella.
In 1974, Marchesi Antinori launched Tignanello – vintage 1971 – on the market for the first time. As a cuvée of Sangiovese and some Cabernet, it did not appear as a Chianti Classico, but as a "simple" Vino da Tavola. Tignanello started a true wine revolution; the Supertuscans were born. Today, Tignanello is one of the most famous red wines in the world.
