"All you need is loess" is the motto of the Sauerstingl winery. The family business is located in Fels am Wagram and cultivates around twelve hectares of vineyards. Franz Sauerstingl is responsible for the vinification of the wines, with a focus on Grüner Veltliner. This is offered in four different varieties: "LÖSS I", "LÖSS II", "LÖSS III" and "LÖSS IV". These designations combine the geological conditions of the Wagram with the classification of the Veltliner from light, fruity and uncomplicated (LÖSS I and LÖSS II) to full-bodied, ripe and expressive (LÖSS III and LÖSS IV).
The vineyards are located around Fels and extend from the Wagramkante (loose gravel soils with a loess layer) to just below the Hengstberg, which at 360 metres above sea level is the highest elevation in the Wagram. This is where the family's most important vineyards are located: Scheiben and Brunnthal. Both vineyards are characterised by particularly deep loess soils and are planted with vines up to 40 years old.
The following white wines are also vinified: Riesling, Pinot Blanc Weissburgunder and the regionally very important Roter Veltliner. The red wines are Zweigelt and the "Dark Red Löss" cuvée.
The fact that Franz Sauerstingl is on the right track with the implementation of his demanding quality concept is confirmed not only by a large number of satisfied customers, but also by the inclusion of the winery in renowned wine guides. Numerous awards as well as the repeated inclusion in the "SALON Österreich Wein" with the Grüner Veltliner and Roter Veltliner varieties reflect the level of the wines.
